Security experts are warning businesses about the continued threat of business email compromise (BEC) attacks. BEC is a type of phishing attack where attackers impersonate a company’s CEO, vendors, or customers to extort money.
A recent report by Cloudflare found that BEC-related financial losses increased by 17% between December 2021 and 2022. Nearly three-quarters (71%) of respondents to the study said they experienced an attempted or successful BEC attack in 2022.
BEC attacks are becoming more sophisticated and convincing, thanks in part to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This is making it more difficult for businesses to protect themselves from these attacks.
If you are concerned about BEC attacks, there are a number of things you can do to protect your business, including:
- Educating your employees about BEC attacks and how to identify them.
- Implementing security measures such as multi-factor authentication and email filtering.
- Having a plan in place for responding to a BEC attack if it does occur.
- If you have any questions or concerns about BEC attacks, please contact a digital security specialist.
